This is my 3rd article regarding bonsai preparation. After pruning, its time to wire the plant. If you are new to bonsai you may be thinking...

Why should I wire a plant?

Well, the basic purpose of wiring is to modify the natural arrangement of the branches to grow and to  make our very own signature style. It also keeps the

For most of the plants there are no particular season or time of the year to do the wiring and can be done year long.

How to wire a bonsai plant?

Wiring material:
Most common type of wires are made of copper or aluminium. If you are a beginner, it is advisable to start with the aluminium ones as they are much more easier to work with than the copper wires.
Put a plastic or some kind of fabric around the trunk and the branches to make sure the wire doesn't stuck into the bark.
In some cases, where the trunk is too thick or fragile for bonding, you need to create a loop in the wire and slowly increase or decrease the pressure as the time goes on. This is also called Guy- wiring.

Caution: Wiring should not be very close as it will affect the sap flow and not too wide otherwise it will loose its purpose.

Wiring the Trunk:
Trunk is the main structure of the plant. To start wiring, you need to choose a wire that is at least 1/3rd times longer than the length of the trunk.
The width of the wire depends on the trunk's width and it should be thicker than those that hold the branches. In case the trunk is very thin, use a thiner wire.
Anchor one side of the wire to the soil or at the bottom of the growing pot and then begin to coil the wire at a 45 degree angle around the trunk. Make the curves narrower while you are moving towards the top.

Wiring of branches:

tension of the branches and maintains the direction of their growth.

Primary Branches: While wiring branches, start working outwards from the trunk and avoid overlapping. Try one piece of wire to bend two branches which are near to each other (it is also called double wiring). You can do this to most of the primary branches. For rest of the branches use separate wires.
Secondary branches: Start this only after finishing the primary branches. The procedure will be the same. Secure the wire by coiling it around a primary or a secondary branch.

Words of caution: Leave the top portion of the plants little loose. These are the portion with soft growth.

How long you need to keep the wire?

The wiring is done for the purpose of styling and it is certainly not very good aesthetically. That is why you don't need to keep the plant wired permanently. How long it should be there? Well, it depends entirely on the plant genre and variety.
With the passage of time the trunk and the branches become thicker and eventually the wire begin to bite into the bark. So keep a close eye on that and as soon as you see any sign of this cut the wire right away.

Words of caution: Don't try to unwind the wires for recycling purposes, it might do more harm than good and can damage the plant permanently.

There are several questions that bother many tomato growers. I have tried to compile some of these in this article. Here is a list of all the frequently asked questions about growing tomatoes.

Staking/caging or no support?
Generally determinate types are the ones that are given no support. If you are using indeterminate type then you need to stake them or provide some sort of cage.

Do you need to prune tomatoes?
Pruning is not mandatory for tomatoes. It depends on the surrounding weather as well as your preference. If the weather is too dry and hot, removing leaves can really damage your plant.

Indeterminate varieties are generally pruned, but you can prune the determinate ones also. Modest pruning will lead to early fruiting and will increase the fruit-size (but you will get fewer fruits). More on Tomato Pruning here in this article.

Does mulching help?
Mulchinghelps in maintaining the moisture of the soil and thus reduces the frequency of watering the plant. It also keeps the soil cooler.

What causes poor fruit sets?
A poor set of fruits can be a result of many things. It can be environmental (like too cold or too hot), age of the plant, unfavourable ratio of NPK etc. The best way to avoid these problems is to give the plant its proper growing environment. Check this article to know more.

How to save tomato seeds?
Extracting seed from a fully grown tomato is very easy. I have written an article on this. Please click here if you want to know about the techniques.

What causes leaf roll?
This is a very common phenomena in tomato plants. This is due to the pressure of water which moves through the roots and causes the older leaves to move inwards. If you look closely you will find the leaves are green and healthy. It is not a disease.

What causes blossom-end rot?
Insufficient water is the main cause of this problem. Sometimes lack of calcium can also cause this. Make sure your plants get adequate water. Follow these techniques of watering. The good news is that the fruits are still edible and you can have it just by removing the affected portion.

What is determinate and indeterminate type?
Determinate type: These are also called the bush tomatoes. They don't grow very tall and reach an average height of 4 feet. These are ideal for growing in containers.
Indeterminate type: These are generally called vining tomatoes and can reach up to a height of 10 feet. They require substantial support in the form of stake or cage. Most of the heirloom tomatoes are indeterminate types.

What are the different tomato cultivar?
These can be of several types. Here is a list of all the cultivars from Wikipedia

What is Heirloom tomato? This is the non-hybrid version of tomatoes and lacks any form of genetic mutation. These are mainly maintained by gardeners or farmers in isolated areas and is considered to be a variety that has been passed down through several generations of family because of its valued characteristics.

Why my tomatoes are cracking?
This is also a problem related to water. Too much of water makes the fruit overflown with juice and to release this pressure it cracks. Mulching and proper watering techniques generally solve the problem.

How to prevent cross-pollinating?
The success of this depends on the seriousness of your efforts. Here are some suggestions.
  1. Plant different varieties of tomatoes far enough so that the pollen don't reach one another.
  2. Use screened cages to grow different varieties.
  3. Cover individual flowers with bags.
  4. And finally, time the planting properly so that you can avoid same time flowering for different varieties.

Pruning is probably the most important part of a bonsai preparation. It is basically done to control plants natural growth and to maintain a proper shape. In this article you will get an idea about different forms of pruning involved in bonsai. This article is a follow up of our earlier article on Bonsai.

Required equipments:
  1. A set of scissors or clippers for different parts of the plant viz leaves, small branches, buds etc.
  2. A pruning saw for cutting older branches in particular.

Pruning can be of two types:

Structural pruning :this is major form of pruning and are done once more in the lifetime of the plant to undergo some radical structural changes to the plant. In most of the cases it includes removing major branches of the plant. The basic rule of pruning is you should prune “one of two opposite branches” on the trunk. You can always give the shape to your bonsai the way you choose, just remember once you cut a branch from the trunk it will never grow again. So proper decision is the key.

Pruning Secateurs

Falcon Pruning Secateurs

Maintenance pruning:this is day to day pruning. The main purpose of this is to restrict irregular growth of different branches (as a result of natural development of the plant).
In bonsai preparation pruning has to be done in many parts of the plant. These includes

Shoots pruning: Pruning of shoots are generally done to inhibit the natural free growth of the plant. But also allows light and air to reach to the lower branches of the plant. Process and frequency may differ from plant to plant depending on its variety or cultivar.

Leaf pruning: This is generally done to the plants with bigger and broader leaves. Clipping down leaves several time will force the plant to grow smaller leaves. You need to remove the leaves from the base just leaving the leaf petiole on the branch. From there smaller shoots and leaves will grow.

Root pruning: It is by far the most difficult part of pruning. Best time to prune roots is at the time of reporting. The seasonality differ from plant to plant. I will not go into details about root pruning it deserves a separate article.

Buds pruning: This form pruning generally has to do with deciduous plants. During the beginning of the spring when the growth starts to appear, pinch the buds from the plant. Sometimes you may have to add some fertilizers to make sure the plant doesn't remain nutrition deficient.

I hope you got an overview about the types of pruning involved in bonsai preparation. Stay tuned for more articles related to bonsai.

This is a follow up article from how to grow cabbage. If you have...

This is a follow up article from how to grow cabbage. If you have not read that already please click here to go to that article. Here is a list of frequently asked questions about cabbage growing.

  1. Why cabbage heads split?

The main cause of head splitting is that more water is entering into the head than necessary. A healthy root system though is necessary for the survival of the plant sometime too much growth of the root system can cause huge amount of water supply to the head.

To prevent the split you can pull the plant little bit to break some of its roots once the head becomes moderately firm. This will limit the water supply. If your plant roots are getting uneven water mulching might be a great way to solve this.

  2. Can you get second crop from early cabbage plant?

Yes, getting a second head is possible. Once you got the primary solid one, cut carefully just beneath the head but leave the older leaves as it is. After sometime, you will get one or more smaller lateral heads (developed from axial buds of older leaves).

  3. What are different cabbage cutivars?

There are many cultivars but these three are the most common.
White Cabbage: These are by far the most common types. They have pale green smooth leaves and are also called Dutch cabbage.
Savoy Cabbage: these have softer heads, crumpled leaves and a very rich flavor.
Red Cabbage: These have purple coloured small to medium size heads.

  4. Why do butterfly fly around cabbage plant?

Cabbage worm lay eggs on the plants which hatches into worms and after sometimes turned into butterflies. So to prevent it you need to control the worms. Try different organic pest controlling techniques discussed in this article.

  5. Why there are holes in my cabbage leaves?

This is also a pest attack. Worms chew the leaves of the cabbage plant leaving those occurred holes in the leaves. Try organic pest controlling to prevent this.

  6. What causes cabbage to develop seed stalks rather than solid heads?

Generally, cabbage will either head up or go to seed at some point in time. If the temperature falls below 45 degrees it will start growing seeds instead of forming heads. 55 to 65 degrees are the ideal temperature slab for growing heads.

  7. Why there are swelling in my cabbage roots?

This is a disease caused by a fungus that remains in the soil. It is spread by moving infested soil and by infected transplants. To discourage the disease, add lime to raise the soil pH to 6.8.

Generally people don't prefer growing plants inside their houses but sometimes that is the...

Generally people don't prefer growing plants inside their houses but sometimes that is the only choice we have got. Like every other thing in the world Indoor gardening has its share of pros and cons. Though there is no doubt that pros outnumbered the cons there are some points we need to keep in mind before plunging into this kind of gardening.

This article gives you a brief about some of the challenges faced by the gardeners while planting Indoor. Knowing about these will definitely give you an extra advantage over others.

So here is a list of top six indoor gardening challenges:

  1. Lack of sunlight: There is a minimum requirement of light for every plant, lack of which can seriously damage its health. Not every person’s apartment or house is blessed with enough sunlight. Sometimes it can resemble like a cave. The solution? You need to provide artificial lights so that plants can continue their photosynthesis. A small glow light which somehow resembles sunlight will do just fine. Also there are plants which do well in very low lights. You can always try your hands on them.
  2. Moisture and Humidity issues: Requirement of humidity varies from plant to plant. Some appliances like heater or air conditioner can change the humidity level drastically. This can result into poor survival rate of the plant. One of the ways to solve this issue is to group your plants according to their likings and use humidifier to provide necessary moisture. Also one of the cheapest ways to provide humidity is to spray the leaves of the plants with water once or twice in a day.
  3. Fertility of the soil: in order to increase the growth and the yield of the plant people add too much of fertilizers in the soil. This can do more harm than good. If you are buying the transplants from nursery ask for proper guidance in terms of fertilizing the soil. Adding compost with the soil can be a good idea rather than going for chemical fertilizers. You will find more about composting in this article.
  4. Watering issues: If you are new to indoor gardening this might sting. Watering is totally different inside your house than may be in your backyard. You need to consider factors such as absence of light, temperature difference, air flow inside your house, container size etc. Make sure your container has drainage holes. Adding small sized pebbles inside the containers before adding soil might be the single best thing you can do to improve the watering of your plant. Just remember what seems absolutely perfect in the backyard might go horribly wrong inside the house.
  5. Infections: Generally speaking, indoor gardening is much more susceptible to much more bacterial and fungal diseases than outdoor gardening. You need to be more observant and quick to react. Due to lack of air flow and natural sunlight the soil and plants become prone to various diseases. Use organic pest controlling techniques to solve those issues.
  6. Pet problems: If you have pets in your house there will be some sort of problem. A cat in particular has a craving for leafy greens. One of the best ways to stop your pets apart from using protective shields around the plants, would be to grow some form of grass also. It will more or less divert your pets to them rather than to your hard toiled vegetables. Also select your plants carefully. You should not grow any plants which are poisonous to your pet.

Share your indoor gardening experiences. What kind of problems you have faced? How did you overcome them? If you like the article, share with others.
