Aquaponics system facilitates simultaneous nurturing of plants and fish by re-circulating water as well as the nutrients that are produced in the system for the growth of the plants as well as the species that are included in the system. This new method for simultaneous management of farm and fish pond is gaining momentum the world over since it provides a sustainable as well as cost-effective solution for farming and growing fish simultaneously.

Various types of warm-water and cold-water fish species can be raised using this method. The fish species that are widely cultivated using this method include perch, Arctic char, trout, bass, cod and tilapia.

Among all the fish species tilapia is the most suited for cultivation in aquaponics systems since the tilapia fish can withstand various fluctuations in the aquatic conditions such as temperature, oxygen content, dissolved substances and pH. Since tilapia fish has good demand in the market, cultivation of this variety is highly profitable also.

Plants cultivation

Cultivation of various plants is the other purpose of aquaponics system. Leafy greens and various herbs are cultivated in this system. However, it depends on the density of the fish tank and the nutrients that are present in the fish waste. The plants that are grown in the system absorb the nutrients that are present in the fish waste and the type of nutrients in the fish waste depends on the type of fish species that grow in the tank.

The water from the fish tank is drained out and filtered and used for irrigation of the plant. Since the fish waste is a rich source of nitrogenous fertilizer it is ideal for raising the leafy plants. The plants such as lettuce, spinach, watercress, basil and chives grow very well in aquaponics systems since the nutritional needs of these plants and herbs are very low.

Fruit-yielding plants like tomato and cucumber also can be cultivated in aquaponics systems. However, since the nutritional requirements of these plants are higher, the system must be sufficiently stocked as well as provided. Cucumbers and tomatoes grow healthy and give good yield in aquaponics system, provided the plants are fed with sufficient quantity of nutrition.

Filling the pots with compost is the most effective method to provide all the nutrients that are required by the plants. Root crops such as carrot and potato can give the yield only if they are grown in soil. Hence the aquaponics method of cultivation is not suitable to them.

Monitoring the water quality

The success of an aquaponics system also depends on the condition of the water that is used in the system. Fish, plants and water are the vital components of this system. In order to ensure safe as well as healthy environment for the fish that is grown in the system, the pH of the water that is stored in the system is to be carefully monitored. Since the fish as well as the plants in the systems are to be kept healthy and growing, periodic checking of the quality of the water using the right equipments is all the more important.

The farmer should also monitor the levels of dissolved oxygen, ammonia, carbon dioxide, chlorine, nitrates and nitrites in the water. The quality of water undergoes rapid change with changes in the density of fish in the tank, growth rate of the fish and the amount of feed they are provided. The fish species, fish density, plant species and other aspects determine the ratio of water in the fish tank to the hydroponic products. However as a general rule, the ratio of tank content to bed content will be 1:4.

Conversion of ammonia

Aquaponics system can be provided with biofilters that facilitate natural filtering out of the harmful substances from the water. When the pollutants are filtered out completely, the process of conversion of ammonia into nitrite and then to nitrate is made hassle-free.
In some of the systems, the fish waste is directly added into the system. The chemical process of conversion of toxic ammonia into nitrites and then to nitrate is facilitated by the gravel bed of the system. The gravel bed functions as a bioreactor and removes the dissolved solids from the water thereby providing the space for the nitrifying bacteria to get converted into nitrogenous fertilizer that provides the nutrients to the growing plants in the system.

Aquaponics system consumes only 10% of water required for regular farming. It provides an ideal method for food production in the backyards of houses.

Aquaponic Fish is one of the most important component of aquaponics system, since aquaponic fish will provide food and nutrition to the plant. Then it is important to choosing it wisely. Before nominate fish for your aquaponic fish, there are some criteria need to be consider to have successful aquaponics system.

Consumable or non-consumable fish

Will you eat the fish?  Do you want to sell consumable fish or not? It is important to answer the question before choosing aquaponic fish.  In general, aquaponic fish is divided into two, consumable fish and non-consumable fish (ornament fish).  For who like to consume the fish, off course they will choose consumable fish, in the other hand for those people that do not want to eat or have consumable fish they may choose ornament fish as aquaponic fish.

Climate/local temperature

You have to choose fish that suitable your local temperature.  It is not good to choose fish that love warm water for very cold place, as well as choose cold water fish for warm climate area.  If you will build your aquaponics system in warm temperature area, then you have more advantage, since most plants refer to warm temperature and water to grow well, then no need to manipulate water temperature from fish tank.
Of course in this case we are talking about aquaponics system for outdoors, since for indoors (green house) aquaponics system you may manipulate the climate.

Local regulation

Some region have their own regulation regarding to what kind of fish can be bred for that region.  For example there are some region do not allow to bred tilapia, due to tilapia ability to adapt and proliferate rapidly, this may be threatening life of local fish.
Following are types of fresh water fish that suitable to breed in aquaponic system.

Consumable fish

  • Tilapia
  • Blue gill/brim
  • Carp
  • Barramundi
  • Silver perch, golden perch
  • Yellow perch
  • Catfish
  • Largemouth Bass

Non-consumable fish

  • Koi
  • Fancy goldfish
  • Various ornamental fish such as angelfish, guppies, tetras, swordfish, mollies

Having a home aquaponics garden has many advantages and due to the nature of aquaponics systems they can be set up and work in many various environments. Aquaponics comes from aquaculture and the fundamental description for it is utilizing fish to grow plants. The fish create all the nutrients that the plants require and in turn the plants filter out the water for the fish to stay in.

So exactly what are the perks of a home aquaponics garden?

Among the most essential benefits of home aquaponics is that it is economical to establish and run the system. A home aquaponics garden will use around 2% of the water that a regular organic garden would use and due to the low power pumps made use of in home aquaponics the energy expense is also very little. You could also set up an alternative energy source for your system which means you could get complimentary energy to run your system. An additional important benefit that includes aquaponics systems is the amount of work needed to preserve the system.

The work needed to maintain an aquaponics set up is very little compared with maintaining a natural garden where everything grows in soil. Because you will not require to water or weed the system, this is. All you have to do is check the pH of the water in your system to ensure it’s optimum and feed the fish. Obviously you should grow your plants and collect them when they prepare. Due to a lot of aquaponics systems having actually increased expand beds you will be able to do this at waist height saving you having to bend your back. There will come a time when you will should clear out parts of the system but if you set everything up correctly you will get huge amount of times when the system will maintain itself.

As saving cash and your back by having home aquaponics garden, you will also discover that your plants will expand much faster and the fruit and veggies will taste fantastic. Due to the fact that your plants are getting every little thing they require much simpler than they would from dirt, this is simply. Some areas are infertile and you would have to make the earth fertile prior to you can begin a natural garden that isn’t the case with aquaponics. You will likewise not need to bother with common pests attacking your plants. The last advantage I am going to talk about today is the preliminary investment to get started in aquaponics. When you look at aquaponics systems that are all ready built the prices can scare you. If you develop your own system, you can save a lot of money. I understand the idea of building your own home aquaponics garden could sound overwhelming however I can assure you it is not as hard as you would think.

The biggest challenge to public health

One of the biggest challenges to public health professionals in the US is this idea of “health disparities” – when a certain population has less health due to some obstacle or barrier – socioeconomic status, geographic location, etc. Typically certain neighborhoods with rows of fast food restaurants, convenience stores and liquor stores have poor health outcomes. They lack access to fresh, local produce which are essential for a nutritious healthy lifestyle.

Trying to solve the symptoms

Some public health departments are trying to solve the food access problem by attacking the symptoms – trying to force liquor stores into “healthy retail stores”. They approach the local owner and try to get them to sell fruits and vegetables even though they make most of their money on alcohol sales. Others have tried to promote cost inefficient solutions like farmer’s markets – which costs the farmers a ton of time, resources and money, especially in an area where sales may be unlikely or farmers markets may seem out of place.

Our Solution

Instead of trying to instill unreasonable expectations on local businesses, instead of telling business owners what they can and can’t sell, we’ve taken a different approach by creating a healthy alternative that bypasses local markets and stores, we’ve created an Aquaponics system that can be set up to grow healthy produce and food right from home!
By growing their own food, people can eat healthier and have a sense of pride for being able to provide food for themselves and their family. Most of the barriers to growing food is land, space, time, money and expertise. Our aquaponics eliminate the land, space, time, and money problem by being as efficient and as automated as possible.
By growing your own food with an aquaponics system, healthy food access will be attainable for all populations, neighborhoods and classes. Utilizing this new technology can save water, save money and build a healthier world for all.
