After discussing on various soil-less growth media in brief in my earlier blog, I have planned to share some more information on the individual media. This is the first issue where I shared some information on one of the most controversial and popular soil-less growing media, Peat Moss. Hope you will like it.

Peat Moss refers to decomposed and dead remain of many components such as mosses, sedges and shrubs etc. But the most common part is Sphagnum Moss. The moss typically grows on top of the bog (deep and wet marshes)and the peat is produced underneath. Ideal condition for formation of peat is wetland where flows of oxygen is not abundant due to the obstruction caused by flood and thus causing slow rate of decomposition. When plant material is inhibited from decaying fully(due to lack of oxygen and presence of acidic medium) then it accumulate as peat. Cool climates are the places where it can be found in plenty.
Country such as Canada, Northern Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand are biggest source of Peat Moss.
On the basis of decomposition state Peat moss can be of three types:
Fibric peat moss: It is the least decomposed one among the three types and contains fibers in intact condition.
Hemic peat moss: It is much more decomposed than the Fibric one but not as much as Sapric type.
Sapric peat moss: This is the most decomposed form.

The usage of Peat moss can be plenty, but here I will only focus on its use in agriculture and gardening.
The use of peat moss in gardening and agriculture has became very popular due to its water retaining ability(can hold up to 20times of its weight) and rich nutrient content. You can mix peat moss with soil it will retain the moisture in dry condition and also its proper drainage capacity prevents the excess water from killing the roots.
Peat can also store nutrients although peat by itself is not fertile. Due to this reason it can also used as fertilizer to the soil.
Peat moss is typically very acidic and can be toxic to plant roots. It is recommended to use by mixing with different other media(with soil or go soil-less ). Before adding it to soil make sure you do the soil pH testing. If the surrounding soil is already high in acid content you should not add peat moss as it will hurt the plant very badly.
Apart from Agricultural and Gardening purpose peat moss are also used in different purposes such as source of fuel(in some countries), water filtration, in preservation, balenotherapy etc.

Controversies:
The popularity of peat has also caused some controversy when it comes to resourcing. Though sphagnum grows in many places, it usually accumulates very slowly, at the rate of about a millimeter per year. But its extraction rate far exceeded its re-growth rate. There are some ongoing debate about whether it should be consider as a “fossil fuel” or “renewable fuel”. Though some of the agencies are considering it as a “Slow-renewable fuel”.
When the demand outpaces the natural production, there is a danger of over-farming. It also lead to a ultimate destruction of bog habitat that support a number of birds, small mammals, insects and microbial habitat.
A last word of caution if you want to use peat moss, or using it regularly take protective measures such as wearing face-masks and gloves. Like every other plant in the moss family, Sphagnum also contains spores, inhaling which can be dangerous. In some cases peat moss contains some harmful bacteria which can cause skin irritation and can cause deceases in case it enters into the bloodstream.

As the name suggests, Container Gardening refers to growing plants in different containers rather than planting them directly into the ground. In today's world when the limitation of time and space has been felt like never before, container gardening seems to make more and more sense. It allows you to grow any plant in anywhere in the world which earlier was never thought of. Poor soil, lack of space are no longer an excuse for abandoning the excellent hobby of Gardening.

As I am writing this article, the popularity of container gardening has exploded through out the world. Plants in different pots and containers can be seen from lawns of bungalows to the rooftops of urban apartments in every country. Those have given an entire different color and texture to the landscaping.

container gardening
But before going any further let me first give you some reasons for starting your own container gardening:

Container Gardening can be the best gardening option for the beginners. Even a rookie can start gardening in very little time.

It can be very economical. No need to waste much more time and money with starting with normal garden. Where most of the initial costs involved preparation of soil bed, weeding, fertilizing, suitable area for gardening etc. you can start with a single pot, little bit of soil or soil-lessmix, and some seeds or just one or two sidling.

You don’t need big space to do container gardening. You can use your terrace, stoop etc. Just make sure you are getting ample sunlight there. When you are having space constrains the container gardening is the best available solution to your problem.

Container gardening can liberate you from the geographical problem you faced while gardening in your traditional garden. It is said that “you can grow Cactus in Alaska” by using container gardening method.

Portability is another big advantage of doing container gardening. While teaching your child Botany, you can definitely give some live example by bringing your container to the study room, make your child associate with the plants without leaving the study room.

You don’t need to worry about critters which may have destroyed your garden earlier.

Here are some nice looking containers available on Amazon

There is almost no plant that you cannot grow in a container. Vegetables, herbs, flowers plants, even trees can be grown through container gardening. You just need the container of appropriate size.

So if you found yourself  interested in pursuing container gardening, I request you to please read on. Container gardening process is very similar to that of  traditional gardening with little fine tuning.

The first thing you need to start a container garden is to find an suitable Container. You can use almost anything in the world as a container as long as it is big enough to sustain the root growth of the fully mature plant and it has proper drainage. As they say in case of container gardening “size does matter”.  Try not to use a container smaller than 12’’. Even a five gallon plastic bag can be used as a container to start gardening.

Railing planters

Drainage is very essential in container gardening. Make sure your container has sufficient drainage facility like some holes at the bottom.

Try to use quality potting soil or make your own by using different soil-less media which I have discussed earlier. You can use your garden soil also but make sure that drainage of the soil is maintained. Using your garden soil also restricts your vegetables or other plants choices as per you local geographic.
As the source of nutrition is limited inside the container, you need to add fertilizers from time to time. Try to use organic fertilizers(like compost), as it will benefit you in the longer run.

You can start from seeds or by transplanting seedlings. Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Choose the option that better suits you.

If you are growing vegetables it is almost necessary to put your container where there is ample sunlight. Plants which are only cultivated for leaves or stems can grow without direct sunlight. You can check the effect of sunlight on the growth of different plants in my earlier article Sun or no Sun.

Unlike traditional gardening you need to take proper care in case of watering plant. As there are no source of water which the roots can reach you need to put water at regular interval. The details of watering techniques can be found here.
As I am a strong believer of “slow but steady” style of growth I will always suggest you to start with small and then achieve the bigger goal with continuous growth. Try to start your container gardening with plants which are easy to grow such as tomato, pea, eggplants  etc than move up to the higher difficulty level such as squash or melons.

Thanks for reading. Like to receive your feedback on this.

Vertical Gardening is now a days getting very popular among the gardeners. Particularly with urban people where the space for gardening is very limited. But to many of us it is still only a combination of two words with so much mystery surrounded around it. Through this blog I made an attempt to demystify the concept of Vertical Gardening and make people motivated enough to start doing it.

Vertical gardening is an innovative, effortless, and highly productive gardening technique, that utilizes various resources to allow plant to grow vertically rather than along the surface of the horizon. If you have some empty wall or bare fence you can beautify those by applying Vertical Gardening techniques. Edibles, annuals, per-annuals what ever is your choice you can apply vertical gardening to almost every possible container plant. Most of the plants can grow without any support, in some cases like Ivy or some particular vegetables you need to provide some sort of support in the form of stakes, cages etc in order to grow properly.
vertical garden
As with any other type of gardening efforts, vertical gardening requires choosing a location with plenty of natural sunlight (for details on the effect of sunlight on vegetable growth click here), rich soil, ample water supply. Whether your garden is very large or tiny, you can make better use of every square inch by using vertical gardening techniques to grow upright crops. Varieties such as Pole beans typically produce twice as many beans as bush varieties if given proper conditions to grow.

In terms of growing food plants in a vertical garden, Cucumber, Bell Pepper, and Tomato plants are excellent examples of vertical gardening. A simple wire cylinder works very well for supporting all three. Growing ivy in walls or fencing is a very common example of using vertical gardening concept for decorative and landscaping purpose.

Following are some of the many benefits that come along with Vertical Gardening:

By shrinking the amount of Garden space required, Vertical gardening saves time and work. Activities such as weeding, watering, fertilizing, and controlling pests and diseases are reduced considerably, while yields are increased considerably.

amazing vertical garden
With Vertical gardening methods, you'll also discover that many ground-level plants pair beautifully with climbing plants, so you can combine different types of plants to create a lush curtain of flowers, foliage, and bounty.

Moreover, a veining vegetable is capable of continuous yields the more you pick, the more the plant forms new flowers and fruit to prolong the harvest. A bush variety, by contrast, will exhaust itself within 2 to 3 weeks.

As you do not need to bend frequently to work on your garden it removes any later problem of lower backache.

It is much, much more fun way to work in a vertical garden than in a traditional garden.

Gardening In the Rain

It is that time of the year when after a searing summer heat, the mercury has already come down and plans to dip even further in coming days as the monsoon clouds looms over our head. While rains evoke different moods for different people, it is also when it is raining that you get to tend to those beautiful plants in your garden, and watch plants grow faster and bloom in the glory of the rains.

Monsoons can be very tricky for Gardeners. With nature favouring the task, the plantation work turns easy. Introducing new plants into the garden, starting a new home garden, planning a terrace garden seems like the most obvious things to do. Crotons and flowering plants are the best to grow in monsoon and add a colourful tint to the lush green foliage.

Also, this is the time of the year when small errors in care or maintenance or neglect occurs and many times it gets overlooked by the green components of the garden. Since saplings and plants have needed water provided by the rains, they do not cry out of thirst even if you forget to water them for a day or two.

But just like scarcity of water is a problem for plants, excess of water can also be a big worry. In water logged conditions, the plants express this by wilting. Most of plants hate water logging and they need good soil drainage to survive and prosper. Some plants do enjoy water logged conditions but their numbers is small. Due to excess water algae get collected on top soil, and in absence of proper actions plants rot. Weeds, insects, Worms also flourish during this season. Stagnant water and worms can destroy the whole garden very quickly.

The following are some of the few points which we need to take into consideration for having a enjoyable gardening season in the monsoon:

1.The first and foremost thing is that you have to make sure you have a proper drainage system. If water got stagnant it will make the plants rot.

2.      To prevent the risk of fertile top soil erosion in the garden due to heavy rains use perforated sheets. It will allow the rain water to reach the plant as sprinkler. So the plants not get deprived of their natural nutrients available in the top soil

3.      In case of planting new saplings, plant only those plants that can adjust to the moisture of the monsoon season. The young plants in the garden and those plants which are too fragile should be sheltered adequately to protect them from the rains

4.      Avoid chemical fertilizers as far as you can, instead try nature's own compost. Earthworms are a gardener’s friend. They not only aerate the soil by tunnelling down, they also fertilize it.

5.      Avoid pesticides altogether. As it will get mixed and transferred with rain and will cause huge damage to the garden. Instead try to use biological controller such as Toads and Frogs. They are voracious insect eaters and can be a very good friend to the gardener.

6.      Mix a good proportion of soil and compost manure for new plants.

7.      It is the right time to try your hand at indoor gardening. Also bring those plants outside so they can get the feel of the moisture in the air.

Gardening as a Hobby

Gardening HobbyA
s  per Wikipedia “A hobby is a regularly undertaken activity that is done for pleasure, typically during one's leisure time”. It's primary focus is to gain some recreation and not that much of earning money. It gives delight and helps in passing the leisure time.

Most of us follow some hobby or the other. Hobbies differ form person to person. There can be  as many hobbies as there are men and women in the world. Tastes differ and so do hobbies. Stamp collecting, coins collecting, photography, swimming, Gardening, kite-flying, etc., are a few of the common hobbies. Everyone should have some hobby. It not only enriches us but also provides vital energy boost to propel in our professional life as well.

Gardening is my hobby. It brings me in touch with the green plants and flowers and filled my lungs with pure Oxygen. We can derive great pleasure from Gardening, growing flowers and some vegetables of the season.

It is useful in many ways. Through this blog I made an attempt to create an awareness about the various benefits of having gardening as a hobby, not only in terms of recreations but also as an everlasting benefit.

1. Gardening is an incredible activity to do with kids. Children can learn to count, as well as learn the names of colors, fruits and vegetables by planting and harvesting. And, of course, knowing how to grow food is a skill that will assist them through their entire life.

2. Gardening allows kids to spend time in nature, being up close and personal with butterflies, ladybugs, worms, ants and spiders. Gardening allows children to get comfortable with soil, while learning that food comes from the earth and not a drive-through.

3.  Gardening is a great way to teach your children, ownership and responsibility. It's a good idea to get them their own tools, and allow them to be in charge of their little patch of earth, which will require their attention on watering, weeding and harvesting.

4. Gardening teaches children not only how to sustain themselves and their environment, but also that resources are not infinite, and need to be cultivated.

5. Though you can get Organic vegetables outside in the market, you never really know exactly how it is grown UNLESS you do it yourself. When you grow your own garden, you decide what goes in the soil and to the plant and more importantly WHAT DOESN'T.

6. Produce is at it's peak nutritional value when ripe. Fruits and vegetables are basically plucked well before the mature and then they have to travel to the supermarket. While it may become ripe by the time you eat it, nutritional value actually decreases with each and every day, after harvest. As the nutrition comes from the stem of the living plant, when you have your own garden you get the  vegetable as nutritious as it can get.

7. Gardening provides all three types of exercise: endurance, flexibility, and strength. It burns enough calories, which also keeps you fit.

8. According to author Joel Salatin, getting in the dirt can actually help boost your immune system! “A little dirt don't hurt!”

9. The average family with a vegetable garden can save a lot of money in terms of saving the money from getting vegetables from outside.

10. Imagine I situation where you might have forgotten to take cilantro while buying your vegetables and in the midst of cooking you are in dire need for some of them. You can always fetch it from your Kitchen garden. Having fresh ingredients in your backyard beats a trip to the store every time!

11. Homegrown vegetables taste SIGNIFICANTLY better than store bought ones.

12. At the grocery store and even at many farmers markets there are maybe two or three varieties of every type of fruit/veggie. But when you grow your own you can choose seeds from an endless list. Do you know how many varieties of tomatoes you can grow in your kitchen garden?

Don't let precious real-estate go to waste. Plant some vegetables which will also decorate your unused, weed infiltrated area and produce a bountiful harvest for you to enjoy.

A kitchen garden doesn’t means you have to garden inside your kitchen, rather it refers to a garden where you can get fresh healthy vegetables to cook In your kitchen. Though the closer the garden to the kitchen better it is for you to collect the vegetables in fresh condition.

For the starters it is recommended to start small and plant what you want to eat, you can always do the add on later. It will not only maximize your pleasure and health it will add energy to continue the activities of Gardening for the longer period.  Choosing a site is very important for the success of Gardening. Given a choice between a sunny spot and a shaded one I would recommend to choose the place with the presence of sunlight. For details on the effect of  sunlight on the growth of plants check out my earlier blog Sun or No-sun.

Next step is to prepare the media for growth. It can be soil or Soil-less. You can directly put the seeds or the seedling into the soil. In case the soil is not of good quality or lack proper drainage, you can always go soil-less. There are different types of soil-less media available. I have discussed some of them here. Whatever the option you take make sure there are no weeds present in the media.
Next is to add compost to the media. It controls weeds adds organic matter to the media and also retains water. More on this here.

The next choice you have to make is whether to start with seeds or with transplants. It is always better to start with transplants as there are fewer chances of mortality and more the chances of success specially for plants like tomato or brinjal. Though many gardeners starts with seeds due to lower cost, more variety and more satisfaction to see a plant go from seed to fully grown.
Make sure your plants don’t die of thirst. Fruits and vegetables require lots of water. Specially in case of transplants, you need to provide enough amount of water initially as the plants yet to grow deep root structure.

Lastly one single tip. It is important to plant some of the flower plants along with the vegetables plants to your Kitchen Garden. Flowers add colours to the garden as well as attract beneficial insects which promote pollination. In some cases it also repels some of the undesirable and harmful insects.
