This is one of my sequel  from my earlier blogs about importance of going Organic and the real meaning of going organic. In this blog I want to share some thoughts about Composting.which is an integral part of Organic Gardening.

The word Compostcomes from two Latin roots, “Com” means “together” and “Post” means “to bring”. So basically compost means To bring together. You have to bring together various things and mix it altogether to form a compost.



Composting is based on the principle of return. As humans we reap things from the earth in the form of produce. But we are not alone, there are many other life forms besides ours that comes into play and make the total cycle run. Giving back to the earth is as vital as taking from it. Composting is a way of using up what we have in abundance to repay a long standing debt to the earth.

Why Composting:

1.       Compost not only contains the major elements that your plants need for the ultimate growth such as Nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium(NPK) but also the trace elements that are sometimes overlooked by the gardeners such as Boron, Cobalt, Copper, Iodine, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum and Zinc. The more varied the material used to make compost is greater the variety of nutrients your compost will provide.
2.       The release rate of nutrients are suitable to your plant's need. In the spring when the plants just start growth, the microorganisms in compost release the nutrients slowly. As the weather starts getting warmer plants growth become more rapid and so as the release rate of nutrients from the microorganisms. It is the nature’s way of controlling the release rate of nutrients.
3.       Compost increases the water retention capacity of the soil, as it holds water up to 200% of its dry weight.
4.       Compost add micro-organism and larger creatures such as earthworms and insects, which are natural soil builders.
5.       Compost binds with cadmium and lead and thus neutralize the toxin present in the soil and prevents plants to take up those material.
6.       Acts as a pH buffer as you can lower the pH by adding compost made from acidic raw material such as oak, saw dust etc.

Different Types of Organisms Generally Present in the Compost:

1.       Microorganisms:

The rule of thumb for preparing compost is it should contain 2 parts of vegetable matter(grass, leaves, straw etc) and one part animal matter(manure). The  
greater the number of material in the compost the more the type of organisms will be at work. You can use any material to prepare composed just remember, the material should have just two qualities: (a) it should be bio-degradable, (b) it must contain things that is usable and available to microorganism.

For a good growing media it is necessary that the plant gets a healthy balance of water and air.Soil sometimes contains harmful bacteria and fungi, and prone to be infected by pests, weeds and soil-borne diseases. The soil-less media are generally considered cleaner and sterile. These media, as the name suggests, doesn’t include soil; plants are grown in different organic or inorganic materials. Soil-less media are getting more and more popular particularly among container gardeners these days.


Some of the most commonly used alternative media are:
1.       Peat moss: It promotes good aeration and water retention capacity. It is light weight and sterile and ideal for germination of seeds. Usually used with other other media.
2.      Perlite: These are basically expanded volcanic rocks and white in colour. It is very lightweight and holds air. Unlike peat moss it doesn’t hold water so need to be mixed with other media for best use.
3.       Vermiculite: It can be used as a substitute of perlite. Like perlite it also doesn’t hold water. It can retain nutrients and help a mix resist changes in pH(a measure of the alkalinity or acidity of a medium).
4.       Coarse sand: It is another medium used by people. Though it improves drainage and aeration, doesn’t retain water.
5.      Coconut coir:Now a days this medium is getting more and more popular. It is the extracts from the coconut husk. It has the same properties as peat moss but with much less mess.


 Your own mix:
Depending upon your choice of crops you can prepare your own mix. Standard practice is mixing Coconut coir(or peat moss), perlite(or vermiculite), small amount of fertilizer(Soil-less mix doesn’t have much fertility by itself. So you need to provide fertilizer from outside) and ground limestone(so that soil-less mix will contain the nutrients also).  There are several other soil-less mix recipes available online which you can easily find. Also there are several ready mix available for you to buy.

For best results:
  1. Lightly moisten the mix before filling the container.
  2. Don’t pack the mix too tightly when planting.
  3. Water thoroughly after planting.
  4. In absence of fertilizer in the mix, start fertilizing two or three week after plantation.

What organic gardening means to you? Most of the people will say Gardening without using chemical fertilizer or pesticides on their plants, but this is only the 50% of the story. When we talk about Gardening organically, we think of plants as the part of the whole ecological system. So it also include soil, water supply even the insects. We have to work in harmony with the natural system and continuously replenish the resource which have been used by the garden. 





The main concept of Organic Gardening is Recycling. Using kitchen scraps, animal and vegetable wastes to provide plants the nutrition or using household soaps or vinegar to prevent pests is just an integral part of organic gardening.

Light (sunlight or artificial light) is one of the most important factors of Gardening. In the presence of light plants bind water and carbon Di-oxide(CO2) into sugar which is being used as food.
This sugar is also used to form new cells, to thicken cell walls and to develop flowers and fruits. Plants effectiveness to produce sugar is normally proportional to the intensity of light (until its too hot or too cold to survive).
In case the plant bears fruits or flowers, it requires much more energy than those which only grow leaves.
If there is a short supply of light even healthy and green looking plant may never yield any flower or fruit, which is definitely a problem with vegetables like Tomatoes or Beans.
In case you are only interested in the leaves (like in the case of spinach or lettuce) Light might not be a major issue.

Keep the plants to a minimum of six to eight hours in direct light in case you are looking for fruits. The results can be very frustrating if you try to grow Tomatoes, Eggplants or peepers in the shade. There is a fair chance that you might come up with a good and healthy green plant without any fruit.

Root crops such as beets, Carrots, Radishes do well in partial shade as they store up their energy before they flower. Plants like Lettuceand Spinach are mostly tolerant of shade. In case of very hot and bright light they need protection.
Only Mushrooms can be produced in total darkness.

Through this blog I want to emphasize the idea of doing Gardening Organically. Most of the people though out the world choose to Garden to control the type of food they eat without the fear of chemical or preservatives, to minimize themselves and their loved ones from the hazards of commercially grown vegetables. The side effects of chemical pesticides can take its toll on human body. 

Everyday we are using lots of chemicals in the form of soap, shampoo, toothpaste, many foods and even in clothing which are manufactured by the use of chemicals. But we are concentrating on gardening and use of those chemicals on our foods. The most common ways by which the chemicals are introduced to our food is by use of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides. 

The use of chemical fertilizers can be very tempting as these are quick acting short term plant boosters and you can see the growth of plants after putting the fertilizers within few days. But in the long race these do more bad than good. 

1.       It deteriorates soil fertility and soil life(which includes earthworm, the ever known friend of farmers).
2.       Preventing plants from getting very essential trace elements make them vulnerable to
diseases.
3.       Many artificial chemical fertilizer contains Acids, such as Sulfuric or Hydrochloric, which increases the pH of the soil. By killing earthworm it also reduced the natural aeration of the soil.
4.       When plants are supplied with much nitrogen(which is abundant in chemical fertilizers) and medium amount of phosphate it can easily contact mosaic infections.


If you think about it, Organic Gardening is a very simple story. For years people have been growing foods without the use of chemicals. It would only make sense to use the same techniques and the get the same results. Organic gardening not only benefits us or our family rather it also helps in maintaining the equilibrium of the ecology and environment which have been severely hampered by the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
1.       Among the many advantages of growing food organically, first and foremost is the food produced using Organic Gardening is more nourishing and beneficial to health. Vitamin C and dry matter contents are far more higher in organically grown crops than in its non organic siblings.
2.       Mineral contents are far better in Organic crops than in non organic ones.
3.       Substantially higher amount of Antioxidants and health promoting compounds are present in Organically grown crops than their counter part which have been cultured with the help of pesticides. Antioxidants can greatly reduce the risk of Cancer.
4.       You can save money not only by growing your own food but also can make some extra cash by selling your “all organically grown food” which are so popular in grocery stores these days.
