Today’s article is about one of the favorite and easiest vegetable. We have discussed spinach growing. Now today we will discuss about its cousin the Lettuce. It will focus on how to grow lettuce and useful tips about growing lettuce.

How To Grow Lettuce

Lettuce is very easy to grow and probably the most favorite vegetable after tomatoes. You can also use container gardening methods to grow them. As discussed in our earlier article lettuce being a leafy vegetable, Lettuce grows pretty well in shade (click here to know about shade gardening) also.
Like almost all other vegetables lettuce also prefer nutrient enriched well drained soil. A pH of 6 to 7 is ideal for lettuce. It is not a plant of the summers. Too much heat will result in faster bolting and will make the leaves taste bitter. An ideal temperature ranges from 45 to 75 degree F.

Lettuce Planting:

The best part of lettuce planting is that you do not need to bother much about the spacing. You can space them wide or you can plant them very close they will adapt to the spacing.
how to grow lettuceSow the seeds only ½ cm deep in to the soil. You can also use coconut coir or Perlite to grow the seedlings.

To make the soil more fertile add compost to the soil before planting. You can also add bone meal, cotton seed meal etc. Choose the manure which has nitrogen in high quantity. Leafy greens like lettuce flourish in nitrogen.

Lettuces do not have deep root system; most of the water it absorbs is from surface and near by. So it is very important that you keep you soil moist. A thick layer of mulch will save them from weed infestation and also retain the water inside the soil.

Normally your lettuce plant can handle little bit of slug and aphid problems. But if you feel the need to make your plants pest free use organic pest control techniques.

The best time to harvest lettuces is in the morning; that is the time when they are crispiest. Harvest with a knife. If the variety forms head; cut it right below the head and separate it from the stem. Some varieties do not form the head. Well in that case harvest the leaves from the outer side of the plant and leave the central core intact. This process will give you continuous supply of lettuce. You can choose any type of leaf be it mature or tender. The immature leaves taste best with the salads.

Hydroponic system is very popular nowadays. Many gardeners are using this system but for a lot of people it is still a mystery. Here in this article we have just decided to demystify the system so if you are interested you can definitely try it out.

Hydro means water. Hydroponic refers to a system where water is used as a source of nutrients to grow plants and no dirt or soil is used. Generally nutrients are added with the water and then the water is circulated through the soil less growth media so that the plants are not deprived of any nutrients.

There are several benefits of this system when compared with the traditional way of gardening. The system helps you to grow more plants in lesser space. The growth rate is faster than traditional soil based gardening. The roots receive good aeration and can absorb nutrients much faster than when in soil. Environmental it helps to stop top-soil erosion.

Some of the plants which thrive in this system are Spinach, Lettuce, Cilantro, Tomato, Peppers, Strawberries etc.

There are two popular hydroponic systems:

1.    Wick system or the passive system: This is by far the easiest and least expensive way. Here you will have a reservoir filled with water and nutrients and another container where you will have the growth media (you can use coconut coir, perlite or vermiculite for this) and plants along with it. The two containers are connected by a wick (you can use a lantern wick for this). The nutrient solution passes through the wick to the growing media. Though it is very simple system it will not work very well for water hungry plants.

2.    Ebb & flow system or the active system: This system is a very popular one. Unlike the earlier system here a pump is attached with the system. The pump first flood the growing media by nutrient rich solution and then drain back the water to the reservoir. This system also helps to provide the soil with fresh oxygen which benefits the root growth. The most popular growing media in this system is rockwool. This system works well with every plant though the cost is much higher than the first one.

In most cases hydroponic system uses inorganic or chemical form of nutrients. But as an organic grower we always recommend you to use organic fertilizers. One of the most interesting ways to use organic fertilizers is switching your hydroponics to an Aquaponic system. Read our earlier article on Aquaponic system here.

We hope this information is will help the beginners to get an idea about the system. If you are a hydroponic grower we request you to share your experiences with us. If you have any suggestions use the comment box below.

Window box is a planting box which is used to grow plants usually placed near the windows. You can also click here if you want to know about roof top gardening. If you live in apartments and do not have the access of roof top or the backyard, this form of gardening is a very good option for you.

It is an interesting and decorative form of container gardening. The material of the box (the container) can be different. Terra-cotta, fiber, wood, plastic, or stone are some of the example of the container materials. While choosing the size of the pot please consider carrying capacity of your windows. If the carrying capacity is pretty low use smaller pots. You can also reduce the total weight of the container by using lighter material and using a potting mix which is lighter than conventional soil. Click here to know more about different media which you can add with your soil to reduce the total weight.

Window box gardening

The best way is to put the boxes outside the window so they will get more lights. You can put them on the windowsills or you can hang them with the help of chains or straps. You can also add brackets with your window to make space for the window box. If you have problems with the opening of the window you can also place them indoors near the sunny window.

While preparing the pot soil, you need to mix compost with the soil. You can also add organic fertilizers in the later stages.  Windows generally get a lot of sunlight. So you need to water them frequently (almost everyday). Make sure your container have drainage hole at the bottom. Add some media like coconut coir which can retain some water.

In most cases window box is used to grow flowers. But you can grow a few of the vegetables also. Some of the best options for growing vegetables are Lettuce, peas, beans, parsley etc. You can add much more glamour to your building by choosing the color schemes or combination of plants which compliment your building.

Remove any parts of the plant which are dead. They can infect the plant with fungal growth so it is always better to get rid off them.

Cactus is one the easiest plants to grow. They offer different size shape and color. There are more than 2000 species of cacti known to men. Best part of cacti is you can grow them inside or outside of your house. They can be either with (desert cacti) or without spines (Jungle cacti).

Here in this article we will give you some tips on cactus growing which will be beneficial even if you already growing them. We would also like to hear from you about your experience with cactus. Please use the comment box to share your views.

Cacti can grow in very hot temperature to very cold temperature. Depending on your climate choose the cacti variety.

Best way to grow cactus is from cuttings. Though many gardeners grow them from seeds we recommend cuttings as the chances of survival is far better in this case. Use a sharp knife for cutting. Select a healthy plant and cut a branch from the plant which has grown recently (within one year). Leave it for some time and you will find callus is growing. This callus will prevent the plant from rotting.

After couple of weeks, bury one third portion of the cutting in the soil putting the callus end inside. And keep it in a shaded location.Water the plant from time to time and when the soil dry up. But do not over water it.

Never give your cacti a large amount of water. These plants have evolved from a condition where there is a scarcity of water. A waterlogged condition can really harm your plant. Water only when it seems that the soil is drying out. In hot summers, you may need to water daily in the morning. But in winter you can skip watering for weeks. More on watering techniques can be found here.

Add a mix of compost along with the soil before planting cactus. They require reporting every one or two years. Best time to use fertilizer is in the time of reporting.

Cacti are also known for their flowers. The flower in a cactus plant looks very different from any other plant. Some cactus plants like Orchid Cactus can grow very large and fragrant flowers.

bamboo gardenBamboo is a giant grass. The best part of growing a Bamboo plant is that it grows very fast and in every spring you should expect to see a number of branches keep emerging. In this article we will share some information about growing Bamboo plants.

Though they are happiest in slightly acidic and loamy soil, Bamboo is one of the plants which will grow in almost any soil type. Just make sure that it has a good drainage capacity and you will have a lashing bamboo garden in a very short time.  To increase the drainage capacity you can add some soil less media with your soil.

While planting, it is important to protect the bamboo plant from very hot sun especially if your plant is very small in size. Best time to plant them is in the springs. Newly planted bamboos required frequent watering. Use organic mulch to cover the area. Mulching will help in water retention, weed protection and being of organic materials it will enrich the soil. Space them not less than 5 feet if you plan to form it dense. For some species you may require to give much more space. In case you are planning to plant a taller one, use some support to hold the plant. Sometimes strong wind can damage or even uproot the plant; so be careful.

Though in most of the cases bamboo plants take nutrients from the soil itself it is better to provide some fertilizers. Use compost for fertilization but focus on the ingredients which are more enriched with nitrogen (N). If you want to know more about the composting ingredients check out our earlier article.

growing bamboo plantsIt generally takes 5 to 6 years for a bamboo plant to mature. You can really give your desired shape by little bit of pruning. Cut just above the node. Depending on the size of the branch you want to prune use a chainsaw or a simple knife. There is very little chance that you can damage the plant by pruning. So don’t be hesitant.

Some times people feel very concerned about yellowing or loss of leaves of their bamboo plant; but it is a common phenomena and the degree varies from species to species. They are evergreen plant and generally shed their leaves to acquire new ones.

A Bamboo plant can also be grown in containers. We will discuss that in some other article.

In our earlier article we have given you an elementary idea about Aquaponics system and basics of Aquaponics Design. To extend our discussion here, in this article we will give you an idea about the various Aquaponics Fish which you can grow in the system. Though you can grow almost any fish you want, we recommend that you stick with fresh water fishes as most of the vegetables don’t like salt water.

So here is top five Aquaponics fish of our choice:

Tilapia for auaponics

1.    Tilapia: Tilapia is a warm water fish. Ideal temperature ranges from 70 to 85 degree F. The best part of growing tilapia is that most of the varieties are resistant to diseases and pests and can survive low oxygen  level also. Tilapia grows very fast and can reach a weight of 1 kilo in 6 to 8 months. A downside of the story is in some places growing tilapia is prohibited. So if you plan to grow them first check the rule book of your country.

Aquaponic koi
2.    Koi: They can survive in a high variety of water temperature (ranging from 30 to 80 degree F). They are brightly colored and can be considered as ornamental fish. Over time they grow whiskers around their mouth and can grow really large. Koi are very tasty and you can definitely use them as food. They are generally expensive compared to other fishes.

Aquaponic catfish
3.    Catfish: They are bottom dwellers; meaning they remain in the bottom of the tank. They are warm water (love temperature of 60 to 80 degree F) fish. The mature fish can reach a length of 18 inches and can weight up to 1and half kilos. Use a fish tank whose diameter is at least 4 feet if you are planning to grow catfish. It doesn’t have any scales and is a good choice if you are planning to eat your fish. A mature catfish can feed an entire family. A word of caution: some of the catfishes have spines on their fins; so be careful while harvesting.

aquaponic goldfish
4.    Goldfish: Goldfish are cultured mostly for ornamental purposes and less for eating due to their fantastic color varieties and body types. They like the water temperature same as the catfishes. They can reach up to 10 inches in length. They are very social and love interacting with humans. Goldfishes release a lot of ammonia into the water which is why it is a great choice for the Aquaponic system.

Aquaponic Trout
5.    Trout: This is a cold water (ranges from 50 to 65 degree F) fish. They are delicious and thus used mostly for eating purpose. These fishes are carnivorous.  For growing trout you are required to provide them a lot of oxygen and quality water. Some people prefer to grow trout in the winter and some warm water fish during the summer seasons.

Here are some points to remember:

1.     Don’t mix herbivorous and carnivorous fishes together. Otherwise you will be left with only one variety of the fish in the tank.

2.    Don’t mix warm and cold water fishes.

3.    Maintain the proper temperature inside the fish tank.
